Glen Toney

For over twenty years, Dr. Glen O. Toney served as a top executive with Applied Materials, Inc., the largest supplier of products and services to the global semiconductor industry. As Group Vice President of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs, Dr. Toney led the development and implementation of Applied Materials’ Global Human Resources strategies and was also responsible for corporate philanthropy, community relations, public relations, governmental affairs, and employee communications. Dr Toney was recognized in Forbes Magazine for helping to earn the company glowing recognition as one of America’s best places to work.


His professional career began as a scientific programmer for Lockheed Missile and Space, Inc. Before joining Applied Materials, he pursued his passion for using education to influence significant changes in the educational preparation of Silicon Valley’s future workforce. He served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in the Ravenswood City School District and the Palo Alto Unified School District.Dr. Toney served as a member of the board of directors of Andrew Corporation, a telecom equipment manufacturer for the 8 years prior to the company’s acquisition in 2007. 


Over the years, Dr. Toney’s involvement in community service has been extensive, always with an eye towards developing the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders. He served as chairman of the 21st Century Education Initiative and as a member of the board of trustees of the Robert Noyce Foundation. He was also a member of San José State’s Curriculum Redesign Committee and Chico State University’s President’s Advisory Board and the School of Engineering and Computer Science Advisory Board. Dr. Toney also served as a member of the California State Universities Board of Trustees for 3 years.


Dr. Toney earned his doctorate in organizational behavior from the University of Southern California. He also holds a bachelor’s degree, in philosophy, from Chico State University and a bachelor’s in mathematics from San José State University, where he also earned his master’s in instructional technology. He has received numerous awards including honorary doctorates from Santa Clara University and Chico State University, the David Packard Civic Entrepreneurs Award, Leadership in Action Award, People Acting in Concert Together, and the Tomas Rivera Corporate Leadership Award from National Hispanic University.
